Do Miracles Still Happen?

In my opinion miracles DO still happen.  In fact, they probably happen on a quasi-regular basis.  The problem often enough is that we are too naive or stupid to see it.  Let me preface his all by saying that I am a Christian and do believe everything in the Bible.  If you don’t, then just stop reading because this post isn’t for you.

People regularly say that in general “miracles don’t happen”.  This is partially because we somehow have this idea that we should be able to see or perform the miracles.  Nobody expects someone to walk around and heal someone from their terrible diseases or afflictions.  (That is a different subject for a different time)  The reality is that we DO have someone walking around and performing those miracles. They just go by a different name, Dr.___(fill in the blank)____. The doctors and medical staff are currently doing everything that is within their power to cure our sicknesses and diseases. 

Jesus himself is generally accepted to have lived approximately 33 years (using the B.C. (before Christ) and A.D. (Anno Domini (or year of our Lord)).  So if you read the Bible you will read about people during those times performing miracles.  It was accepted that people could “heal” with their faith in God.  So why don’t we see these things anymore?  This is just an opinion, but we do.  The reality is terrible diseases and afflictions still exist.  There is nothing we can do about that.  Let’s take cancer as our primary “go to” because that is generally accepted as a terrible disease.

 

The reality is that we do have a cure for cancer.  It’s just not the way that people want to have one.  There are lots of people who go through chemotherapy and other treatments to “beat cancer”.  Sure, there is no person walking around saying “be healed” and then suddenly it’s gone, but we have a “cure” for cancer.   If you are lucky enough to catch it early, most cancers can be treated.  

It makes me wonder how many people were really dying of cancer way back then, only we never knew about it.  “Cancer” didn’t have a name back then like it does today.  Cancer is a terrible disease.  As an aside, my aunt passed away because she had cancer in her gastrointestinal line.  My aunt was lucky enough to know the Lord and I believe she is in a better place now. 

So there may not be a cure for cancer, but the reality is even if I did discover a cure all for cancer, something else would just pop up and take its place.  A quick search online will show you tons of people who are fighting cancer.  Likewise my Facebook wall is littered with tons of people who have “beat cancer”.  So no, there is no miracle cure for cancer.  At least not yet anyways, but once someone discovers one we’ll be saying the same things about some other horrible disease.

Modern medicine is a big part of the reason why I am alive and doing as well as I am today.  I am extremely grateful for it and those who have helped keep me alive and well.  Other than the Lord himself there is no one in today’s day and age that could have “cured” me from the pain and suffering I have ultimately gone through.  But the bottom line is this:  MIRACLES DO HAPPEN! 

They just don’t happen in the way that we would expect or like to see.
